1. Ave Verum
Ave, ave verum corpus
natum de Maria virgine,
vere passum immolatum
in cruce pro homine.
Cuius latus perforatum
unda fluxit et sanguine,
esto nobis praegustatum
in mortis examine,
in mortis examine.
2. Temptation
Colourful youth crowns the wooden king
Songs of joy the birds do sing
What lurks behind the fruit of bloom?
Is it endless life or day of doom?
Shaken by invisible hands they fall
which given life before now crawl
Scattered on the ground they lay
patiently kings defenders fade away
Fate revealed what once concealed
Considered to be a mighty shield
Bony hands which grab light tight
Scary in the mist they look at night
Roots deep down beneath forever last
From above the seeds like clouds of dust
Follows principle of nature's riddle
But just a little - just a little
What seems to be the field of battle
Chaotic like the snake that rattles
What could be the funeral chapel?
Is it an apple - just an apple?
3. Care, charmer sleep
Care, charmer Sleep, son of the sable Night,
Brother to Death, in silent darkness born,
Relieve my languish and restore the light,
With dark forgetting of my cares, return.
And let the day be time enough to mourn
The shipwreck of my ill adventured youth,
Let waking eyes suffice to wail their scorn
Without the torment of the night's untruth
Cease, dreams, the images of day desires,
To model forth the passion of the morrow,
Never let rising sun approve you liars
To add more grief to aggravate my sorrow.
Still let me sleep, embracing clouds in vain,
and never wake to feel the day's disdain.
4. Sound of the sea
The sea awoke at midnight from its sleep,
And round the pebbly beaches far and wide
I heard the first wave of the rising tide
Rush onward with uninterrupted sweep;
A voice out of the silence of the deep,
A sound mysteriously multiplied
As of a cataract from the mountain's side,
Or roar of winds upon a wooded steep.
So comes to us at times, from the unknown
And inaccessible solitudes of being,
The rushing of the sea-tides of the soul;
And inspirations, that we deem our own,
Are some divine foreshadowing and foreseeing
Of things beyond our reason or control.
5. Last Land
Oh! Death will find me, long before I tire
Of watching you; and swing me suddenly
Into the shade and loneliness and mire
Of the last land! There, waiting patiently,
One day, I think, I'll feel a cool wind blowing,
See a slow light across the Stygian tide,
And hear the Dead about me stir, unknowing,
And tremble. And I shall know that you have died,
And watch you, a broad-browed and smiling dream,
Pass, light as ever, through the lightless host,
Quietly ponder, start, and sway, and gleam
Most individual and bewildering ghost!
And turn, and toss your brown delightful head
Amusedly, among the ancient Dead.
6. Entwined Visions
When the sun behind the earth does hide
The mischievous shadow in front even at night
Howling shadows at the innermost of mine
Chased by an enemy and friend at one time
Presence of pain hunted by thee
Thou art often shrouded in mystery
Beautifully veiling the deepest essence
Artfully hiding thy mysterious presence
No brilliant mind canst vanish thee
The second coming is without chance to flee
The salvation of light for which we lust Flares once, then dies, crushed by madness, falls to dust
There is nowhere to shelter there is nowhere to hide
From the shadow that follows silently at night
All forlorn hope must perish, not endure
How could we fail, fail to believe?
Save us from ourselves cause we are fallen
Our soul thrives no more, fearful are we
When the night falls as if slain by the sun
In a heavy, suffocating cloak, entwined are we…
7. On Death
Tell me thou safest End of all our Woe,
Why wretched Mortals do avoid thee so:
Thou gentle drier o' th' afflicted Tears,
Thou noble ender of the Cowards Fears;
Thou sweet Repose to Lovers sad dispaire,
Thou Calm t' Ambitions rough Tempestuous Care.
If in regard of Bliss thou wert a Curse,
And then the Joys of Paradise art worse;
Yet after Man from his first Station fell,
And God from Eden Adam did expel,
Thou wert no more an Evil, but Relief;
The Balm and Cure to ev'ry Humane Grief:
Through thee (what Man had forfeited before)
He now enjoys, and ne'r can loose it more.
No subtile Serpents in the Grave betray,
Worms on the Body there, not Soul do prey;
No Vice there Tempts, no Terrors there afright,
No Coz'ning Sin affords a false delight:
No vain Contentions do that Peace annoy,
No feirce Alarms break the lasting Joy.
Such real Good as Life can never know;
8. The Way beyond
Absorbeth by cold emptiness of space
Descend in thy Vortex of time
Between suffering and grace –
Neither evil nor divine
From Death thou art ascend
Misguided slaves of life
Thy purity hath no end
Salvaged souls on an eternal dive
A covenant by the ancients doth
Forgotten thoughts of futile resistance
Bereaved the wicked and the god
Once lost the chains of mortal existence
Doomed to lunacy and disguise
Embracing betrayal, blindness and blight
Thus unveiling answers shall arise
Come forth thou sable night!
