DEATH BIOGRAPHY
Death was one of the pioneering death metal bands, headed by metal legend Chuck Schuldiner. The band underwent many line-up changes during its history, with Chuck Schuldiner being the only mainstay throughout the lifetime of the group.
Founded under the name of Mantas, in Orlando, Florida, after a couple of demo tapes were released, Chuck had decided to change the name to "Death", in 1985. Soon after, amidst a few band changes, their first full-length; Scream Bloody Gore, was released in 1987, planting Florida firmly in the roots of death metal's beginnings, and starting it on its way to becoming the death metal scene of today.
By 1990, Death had released Leprosy and Spiritual Healing, and taking on-board journeyman guitarist James Murphy (who later went on to play for Obituary, Cancer, and even Nevermore at one point, among others). With a growing legion of fans in tow, the band released their next album, Human, featuring metal bass legend Steve Di Giorgio, which would become their best selling album to date. The albums that followed showed a gradual change in style, taking their sounds into the realms of progressive metal and showcasing Chuck Shuldiner's growing guitar talent. This, along with Chuck's unique and often thought provoking insights into life have ensured that Death will forever be remembered for their work. Their last album, The Sound Of Perseverance, was released in 1998.
They released 8 albums in total and 2 videos ("Lack Of Comprehension" and "The Philosopher"). Death met its end when Chuck Schuldiner died in 2001 after a 3 year battle with brain stem cancer. He was 34 years old, but his legacy lives on.
One of the overlooked facts about Death is that their drummer Richard Christy (From 1996 to 1999) is in fact THE Richard Christy who can be seen on Howard Stern and also a stand up comedian.
